Is there such a thing as fail-protected fencing and gates? Maybe someday! Within the meantime, there are specific steps it’s best to take to ensure your horse not solely stays in his enclosure, however remains there safely.

First of all, consider visibility. Your horse must be able to see his fencing, otherwise injuries are imminent. While your horse shouldn’t have any trouble seeing a wood or PVC fence, wire fences pose more of a problem. Colorful tape or ribbon tied to the fence every foot or so makes the horse aware of the fence.

Next, contemplate the peak of the fence. Fencing have to be excessive sufficient to deter the horse from going over, and low sufficient to deter him from going under. How excessive is high sufficient? About nostril excessive (the horse’s nose, that is!) should do it. When you’ve got a couple of horse in the enclosure, put it at the height of the tallest horse’s nose.

There are various different types of fencing to select from, however electrical, wood, and PVC are essentially the most popular.

Electric fence is probably the most economical for horsemen on a budget. The most popular forms of electric fence for horses are galvanized wire, plastic-coated wire, half of-inch electrical polytape, or 1 half-inch electrical polytape. A great way to make wire fence visible to your horse is to tie brightly coloured cloth on each strand every three feet or so. Along with the wire you will want insulators, posts, hardware, and a charger. For about $200, you can buy everything you have to build a small electrical fence corral.

If your budget is larger you may want to examine wooden—both board, slipboard, or rustic rail. While lumber prices will range from area to space and do fluctuate, wooden is at all times more expensive than wire. Wooden fencing is more aesthetically pleasing than wire and will add worth to your farm, however it will additionally cost you time and money in upkeep. Fences made out of non-pressure handled wooden should be painted or stained regularly, and damaged or harmful boards should be changed as noticed. When installing board fencing, be sure to nail the boards to the within of the posts, and never the outside, to forestall them from popping off when a horse leans in opposition to them. Nail heads should be flush, and the fence posts should be stable. If you’re in a situation the place it is crucial that your horses don’t get out—your pasture borders a busy highway, you wish to separate stallions from mares, etc.—you would possibly want to contemplate working a strand of electric wire along the top rail of the fence.

If money isn’t any object you will get engaging fencing with little or no upkeep. PVC fencing is aesthetically pleasing because it seems like wooden from afar, nevertheless it never needs portray and won’t rot, rust, splinter, or break. Some producers declare it’s stronger than wood.

Regardless of what kind of fence you choose, once you have it up it is important to walk it frequently for safety reasons. Make sure there are no downed wires or boards that horses could get caught in or escape through. All fencing must be free of any protruding wires, nails, or pieces of splintered wood that a horse could injure himself on. As you walk your fence, replace any broken, sagging, or splintering boards and downed wires as you notice them. Always check your posts for sturdiness by grabbing them and giving them a good tug; if you live in an area where the ground temperature changes frequently you’ll need to do this more often.

Bear in mind, function is essential in terms of fencing, but so is safety!

Long before we walked the earth, there were horses in existence. Horses are beautiful animals and seem to have a spiritual presence. They are extraordinarily sensitive creatures which have this almost mystical ability to pick up on human emotions and moods. Perhaps this is why horses throughout the ages have been a focal point of many myths and legends.

The Magical Unicorn.

One of the most well known mythical horses is the Unicorn, which has long captured the heart of the young and the old. Different cultures have different names and legends that pertain to the unicorn. The story of the origin of the Chinese written language involves a unicorn by the name of Ki Lin who showed it to Emperor Fu His over five thousand years ago. The Emperor saw that the unicorn was covered in symbols, and traced these into the dirt on the ground before hm. The story goes that this is how the written Chinese language originated.

The unicorn is called the Karkadann in Arabia. It is a ferocious war like creature that can appear in different forms. The unicorn makes its first appearance in 416 BC in written accounts from India. A foot-and-a-half long horn topped the dark red head of this otherwise white creature, described as having dark blue eyes.

At around three feet tall and a mere one hundred pounds, the European unicorn of folklore is like a smaller version of a horse in every way excepting its horn. The unicorn of Northern Europe is described as being either white or cream. In Southern Europe they are described as being nearly black to a golden colour. Magical healing powers are attributed to the horn of a unicorn.

The modern unicorn is described as similar to the European unicorn, except it is bigger and resembles a horse more closely. It is said to look exactly like a horse with a horn in the middle of its head. It is usually depicted as being pure white, however it has even been described as being colours like pink, purple and blue.

The modern mythical images of unicorns even today remain a popular fascination with young and old in Western cultures. Many books, films, stories and even kids’ toys feature a mythical beast which we call the unicorn. In reality unicorns do not exist, however, in our hearts and minds they will always have a special place.

The Magical Flying Horse.

Another horse type creature that has been written about in mythology and other stories is Pegasus. Pegasus – offspring of Posiedon and Medusa in Greek mythology – was a magnificent white winged horse that was ridden by Bellerophon and had mystic powers. Honoured by the Greek god Zeus, Pegasus was given the special job of carrying Zeus’s thunderbolts. Euippe became Pegasus’s mate and they had two offspring named Melanippe and Celeris. The legend goes that on the last day of Pegasus’s life Zeus changed him into a constellation that can still be seen today.

A Good Luck Symbol.

In many countries and to many people the horseshoe is a symbol of good luck. How exactly this came to be is unclear, yet it is one of the most famous superstitions relating to horses. The crescent shape of the horse shoe is symbolic of protection, and some say that this is the source of the luck. Some contend that the luck originates from the horse itself, and the shoe is lucky by mere association. It was once believed that iron was magical metal and that blacksmiths were magicians with supernatural powers. Iron horseshoes were hung in doorways to ward off witches and demons for this reason.

The horseshoe could also be considered lucky by virtue of the seven nail holes in each. The number seven is believed to hold powers of good luck in some cultures. One belief held that a horse wearing shoes fashioned from the sword which had spilled the blood of a warrior would be speedy and never tire.

Throughout the ages there have been many old wives’ tales and superstitions about horses and donkeys. Some of the strangest and most interesting superstitions surrounding horses are listed below.

If a horse stepped in the paw print of a wolf it would become crippled.

If you change a horse’s name it will bring you bad luck.

Inhaling a horse’s breath was said to be a cure for whooping cough.

Riding a donkey whilst facing the wrong way is supposedly a cure for snakebites and toothache.

To change the bad luck associated with breaking a mirror you would lead a horse through your house.

To prevent a witch from casting a spell on your horse you would carry a rowan wood whip.

Horse hair used to encircle a wart would get rid of it.

To protect yourself from witches you take the tail hair from a black stallion and wear it on your wrist.

Putting pennies into your water tank would stop a mare being irritable.

If you wanted to improve the tone of your piano, you could try putting the skull of a horse under the floor below it.

Horses do often appear to have this magical quality which continues to draw us to them. Certainly they inspire awe in most who are fortunate to come into contact with them. Their important place in the history and development of so many cultures and civilisations is down at least in part to this amazing ability to awe and inspire. The horse forms an important and even integral part of our cultural identity, being so intertwined with our storytelling traditions as it has been, and most likely always will be..

This article has been published for the millions of horse enthusiasts all over the world by Animal Friends Equine Insurance – the UK’s only not-for-profit horse insurance provider.

Horse rugs come in many different shapes, fabrics, weights and sizes, all designed for a different use. Some are light, some are heavy, some are for when a horse is working, others for when it is rested, some for indoor, some for outdoors. Differences in fabrics, heaviness, thickness, shape and other factors are determined by the needs of the horse in certain conditions.

Although most horse rugs are meant to be worn when a horse is at rest, there are several which may be used when the horse is being ridden or worked. Saddle blankets prevent chafing from a saddle and provide some heat. A longer quarter sheet which extends to the horse’s rump provides even more warmth if needed.

For outdoor use, there are several different types of horse rug available. Which is used depends on the weather, the temperature and other potential threats to the horse, like flies or dust.

The summer blanket is the lightest outdoor horse rug and keeps the horse clean while offering some protection from flies and other pests. Some may be water resistant or at least shower proof.

The turnout blanket is still lightweight but provides a little protection to the turned out horse against chills in the early and late parts of the day during spring and early autumn. Some may also be water or shower resistant. During warmer months the turnout blanket can be used as a protection against flies and pests.

During the cold winter months, the turned out horse will need extra protection against colder temperatures. Breathable materials, usually waterproof or water resistant, are often used. A fleece rug can be used underneath as an extra layer of warmth. A heavy canvas rug called the New Zealand rug is still commonly used and is shower proof thanks to its wax coating.

Where flies and pests are the main problem for a horse, specially designed fly sheets can provide extra protection. These cover more of the horse’s body and often come with a hood or mask which also covers the head and neck area.

When being kept indoors a stable rug can be worn. Some are thicker and warmer for the winter whilst a light stable rug can protect from flies and pests when the horse is stabled.

Some rugs have a very specific use, whereas some are good for more general usage. A cooler rug or mantle is designed to be draped over a horse so that it cools less quickly after bathing or riding / working when the horse is sweating. A fleece rug, on the other hand, is a great general purpose rug which can be used as a travel rug, a cooler, a light stable blanket or for extra warmth under a turnout rug or blanket.

Wearing a travel rug during transportation protects a horse against knocks, pests and dust and dirt. A mantle, light blanket or fleece rug can be used.

The safety and health of a horse can be maintained by using the right horse rugs for the conditions. A horse owner is wise to ensure that have all kinds of rug that their horse may need.

Horse rugs serve several different purposes such as warmth, coat protection and decoration. Horse wear is the best way to have a functional and attractive garment for your horse.

If you have a dirt floor in your horses stall you’ll know that it has it’s disadvantages . Cold and easily waterlogged in wet and cold weather and high maintenance when it comes to keeping it clean, especially when used in conjunction with a deep straw or wood shavings bed. So the question is. What are the alternatives to a dirt floor in horse stalls?

When considering alternatives there are a number of issues you need to bear in mind. Cost, ease of cleaning, benefits to the horse and benefits to you are some things you need to think about when you are considering making any changes to your horses stall.

One of the most cost effective and best alternatives is rubber matting. An increasing number of horse owners are switching to this alternative. The main drawback is the initial outlay for the rubber matting. Although it may seem like a lot of money to pay out, it will pay itself back!

Rubber matting lasts for a long time, if you look after it and keep it free of the ammonia from horses urine then it can last for years. If you add up how much you would spend on straw or wood shavings in that time then you can see that in the long run it can be economically viable.

The benefits to your horse are multiple. Rubber matting is great if your horse has allergies or respiratory problems as it is dust free and can be used alone, with no need to add any dust filled bedding. This makes it far more comfortable and healthy for your horse, and means that you will be able to ride more often as your horses health improves, not to mention the savings you will make on veterinary bills.

It is also ideal if your horse is the kind that will eat anything, including it’s bedding. Many horses become ill because they eat their straw or even wood shavings. This can lead to ill health and weight problems, neither of which are good for you or your horse.

Rubber flooring is also comfortable for your horse to lie on and surprisingly warm in the winter. Some people add a thin layer of wood shavings, straw or shredded paper to eliminate any chills and make their horses even more comfortable in the winter.

Possibly the biggest advantage to having rubber flooring often referred to as horse mats is the ease of cleaning. Gone are the days of getting up 2 hours early on a freezing cold winters morning to go and clean out your horses filthy stable with a pitch fork and a wheel barrow. Gone are the cold hands and sore backs that go hand in hand with deep beds in stalls that need cleaning out!

All you need to clean your rubber horse stall mats is a hose pipe. You sweep out any bedding that you have put on the rubber matting and then clean the matting with water and a mild cleaning agent to ensure your matting does not get damaged by urine laying on it. Make sure you rinse the cleaning agent thoroughly to avoid adverse effects for your horse.

Although a dirt floor and straw or wood shavings bed is perfectly adequate and comfortable for your horse there are certainly advantages to having rubber matting which you might want to think about looking into.

A reliable source of high-quality rubber mats is a great investment to make. Stall flooring can not only help your horses’ health, but rubber mats are also more convenient in terms of maintenance.

Horse trailers must have a minimum of brake lights, running lights and turn lights. As the majority of horse trailers do not have an electric source, they have to tap into the tow vehicle’s wiring. Hooking up a horse trailer requires a T-One connector, an external wiring box which is pre-wired to a four-pole flat connector. This horse trailer connector comes in many other forms, one of which must fit into the connectors of your private vehicle. Consult your owner’s manual to find the correct T-1 for your vehicle.
Leaf Through all the major used horse trailers dealer websites to get the best price.

Determine which sort of trailer plug shape your trailer uses. The best method to tell is by shape; the trailer will either have a spherical trailer connector or a square trailer connector. You want a matching receptacle on your vehicle. Several private trucks and SUVs come already equipped along with a tow ball on the rear bumper. If your vehicle doesn’t have one, take it to an auto shop to get it welded on. It must be mounted on your bumper for a bumper pull trailer or mounted in the bed of your truck for a gooseneck trailer.

Install the T-one connector for your vehicle. The T-one wiring connector plugs into your vehicle’s existing wiring system. Locate the suitable wiring by removing a tail light and following the wires backwards from the light. Unplug the wiring on your vehicle at the connectors resulting in the rear lights, plus plug during the T-1 connector. This means that you will have tail lights on your trailer instead of your vehicle.

Nearly all horse trailers operate a separate braking system controlled by an electronic brake controller. Purchase a brake management box plus have the controller professionally put in so that your electronic trailer brakes operate correctly. Lots of trailer companies install these controllers for a minimum fee.

When you have put in the T-one connector plus your trailer plugs, begin attaching the wires to their sister parts. Begin by locating the ground wire–the white wire on the connector. Attach the ground wire to a good ground, such as a bolt or screw running through the metal bumper or frame. A properly attached ground line can keep your system from shorting out and changing into ineffective. The wire may be hooked up either by electric drill or by wrapping the wire around the screw or bolt.

So, you have decided that you want to take horseback riding lessons, but you have no idea how to get started. Luckily, there are endless resources available and you should have no problem getting started.

So, you have decided that you want to take horseback riding lessons, but you have no idea how to get started. Luckily, there are endless resources available and you should have no problem getting started.

The first thing that you should do is to find a horse back riding instructor. There are many resources that you can access to find the perfect instructor for you needs. You can start by looking in your local phone directory, going to a horse show, or by word of mouth (do you have a friend or know someone taking lessons). You can also contact national, regional, or local horse clubs, the United States Equestrian Federation, or breed associations (AQHA, APHA, Appaloosa horse breeders…). You could also stop by a local stable and ask if they have an instructor that gives lessons, and even if they do not give lessons, they will probably know of someone who does.

When you are looking for an instructor, do not be afraid to ask question. After all, you want to get the best possible instruction for your money. The first thing you should ask is if the instructor has any certifications or accreditations. You should also ask how long they have owned and ridden horses, how long have they been teaching, what is their specialty (you want to make sure that they teach the discipline that you want to learn), how many students do they currently have, and do they offer private lessons? Once you have found an instructor, it is also important to evaluate the stables that they teach at.

When you are visiting the stables it is important to make sure that the stables are clean, the horses look healthy, and that the stables main priority is safety for everyone. Here are some specific things that you can look for when you are visiting a stable. Is the riding area free from clutter, are the students wearing riding helmets and horse back riding boots, are the lesson groups to big, do the students appear to be on the same level, are the horses healthy, and finally does everyone appear to be happy and having fun learning?

You have found a good horse riding stables and a good instructor, now it is time to find all the proper equipment. Many times your instructor will have all of the equipment you will need for your lesson and you will not need to purchase any of your own equipment at first. After you have progressed in your lessons, you may want to have your own equipment. There are many ways to find good quality equipment with out spending a fortune. Your best bet is to ask your instructor or other students at the stable if they, or someone they know, have any equipment for sale, or you can check your local paper or tack shop. When shopping for equipment you want to make sure that nothing is torn or cracked and you want to make sure that all of the leather equipment (saddles and bridles) have been properly oiled and conditioned to prevent the leather from cracking.

You should now have the basic knowledge to find everything that you need to become a great horse back rider in no time.

Want to learn horseback riding from your home? Jim Milton has a great online course that will help you achieve that in no time and without paying for expensive classes. Visit Milton’s horse riding lessons and start learning today.

As human beings we are alert to the peril of remaining in the sun too long. We all know that if we spend to much time out in the sun we run the chance of turning a pleasant suntan in to an unpleasant sunburn. Besides being unpleasant and painful we are aware that sunburns often leads to skin cancer. We employ all sorts of tricks from sunscreen to light weight covers to prevent our
skin from frying.

Since they’re big and seem like infallible (a trait that each horse owner is aware is an illusion) we regularly forget about the affect the sun has on our horses.

Equines, same as people, can sunburn. Sunburn is most often observed on horses with a light colored hair coat such as Appaloosa’s, Lipizzans, Paints, Pintos, Andalusian, and Grays. Horse owners who own equines with white noses and lots of pale skin across the eyes often find themselves treating their horse partners for sunburn. A rapid modification in hormones, like horses that have been bred, could cause a horse to acquire sunburn. Although dark horses aren’t commonly irritated by sunburn the sun often bleaches the dark hair. In some cases harsh sunburn is alleged to contribute to some liver damage.

Horse owners should also be aware that some medications can also set-off sunburn in horses. Tetracycline is one medicine that has been recognized to cause sunburn in some horses.

Horse sunburn appears the same as human being sunburn. The skin turns an irritated shade of pink or even a violent red. If the skin is left untreated long enough it starts to dry and crack. Horses which might be suffering from severe sunburn will begin to break out in blisters. Sunburn could cause hair loss.

Soothing burnt eyes is reasonably easy. All an owner needs to do is purchase a fly mask for their horse. When using a fly mask it is extremely important to make sure the fly mask is kept clean. Just use a hose including a sprayer to rinse the filth and eye gunk from the mask. After rinsing the fly mask suspend it in the sun to dry.

A quantity of fly masks have an extension that guards the end of the nose from becoming sunburned. If you don’t own a fly mask that covers your equines nostril all you must do is rub your horses nose with sun tan lotion that you can purchase at any local drugstore.

Some horse owners, especially ones who have an interest in showing, try to prevent the sun from damaging their horses coat by keeping them inside throughout the day time hours when the sun is the foremost hurtful. Other owners opt to keep their horses covered with a light weight turn out blanket or fly sheet to guard their horses hair coat. An example of the reasons some owners desire a blanketed horse to one kept inside is they feel that retaining a horse stalled and wholly freed from sunlight can lead to depressive disorder.

“Mommy, Daddy… I want a pony” is a common statement heard from children. Ponies are a great little friend to have for a child and a fun way to spend time. They are basically a very large pet that takes a lot of care and attention and you want to make sure you are able to be equipped for one before you answer ponies for sale want ads.

The biggest question you should ask yourselves is if you are ready for the year round responsibility of a pony. It is time consuming and expensive for you the parent and it a twenty four seven commitment. If you have any doubts that it is not good timing to add a pony to your investment portfolio then you should hold off.

If you have asked yourself the tough questions and know you are all ready then you can begin looking for the pony that you would like to purchase. The following are some items that you will want to consider before you write the check. Take your time and look at all the factors below.

If you are buying an existing pony you will want to evaluate the size of the pony and if it is the best size for your child. You will also want to evaluate the temperament of the pony. Some are very used to children and great with them and some are temperamental and not good with children.

Lineage will determine the price you pay for a pony. If a show pony is up for stud it can earn a hefty sum to be bred. The same is true for an existing animal that is now for show. Should you not be considering show you have more options for purchase at a better price.

If you choose to show a pony or buy in a prestigious lineage then you can then at a later time stud your own pony as well for profit. Your investment will pay in the long run if you choose to go that route. You also continue the lineage for the animal which adds value as well. Taking equestrian lessons are also a great idea for a new rider as well as a class for the care of the new pony to be fair to the animal in all circumstances.

And prior to final sale when still considering the pony have it checked by an independent vet who knows about ponies very well. You can see if your investment is going to be profitable and if the sale is a good decision by the soundness of the animal. This is common practice in the sale of an animal so be cautioned if the current owner objects to it.

Ponies for sale are very tempting to call but make sure that you and your child are ready for the responsibility. Ensure the temperament and size of the pony is good for your child. Also ensure that you as parents are ready to handle the responsibility as well.

Christmas is almost here, and there are a ton of girlies around the world who just adore ponies for sale. So if you want to make their festive season, search for horses for loan online today.
