The ABC’s of Horse Jewelry

Posted December 31st, 2009 by Barb Jackson

People have been fascinated with horse jewelry (jewelry with horses on it) throughout the ages. From the most ancient of days to our present era today, families would often incorporate the image of a horse into their jewelry. Usually made from precious metals and gems, such as gold, silver, and diamonds, they were often passed down from generation to generation. They became valuable keepsakes.

Where did this desire to put a “mere animal” on a beautiful piece of jewelry come from? Just think of the horse…it’s not too hard to imagine. The horse is an animal with a number of desirable traits…traits that we all hope we possess in our own character. What are these traits? They are:

1) Horses are Strong. Throughout the ages horses have been asked to perform many of man’s most menial tasks. We need to think no further than the noble Clydesdale. It can spend all day plowing the fields, and then find time to pull the famous Budweiser Wagon. Any jewelry that incorporates the design of the horse will exude the shear power and strength of this wonderful animal. This form of jewelry is a very popular gift item amongst men.

2) Grace – When one thinks of grace, the horse often comes to mind. When you watch them gallop along a beautiful meadow you cannot help but think of grace. Every muscle and tissue of their being seems focused on pulling this magnificent animal across the field. Beautifully streamlined, these creatures are the heart’s desire of many a young girl. A special marriage is made when you add diamonds into the mix. A diamond, known for it’s elegance and class, is one that marries perfectly with equestrian design.

3) Horse Nobility. Many years ago, during the Middle Ages to be more exact, knights would often ride long in their full battle armor. The symbol of a horse would often be designed onto their shields. What form of transport did the peasant use? Their feet. No horse, no armor, and most certainly no shield with a horse design. If we move ahead to our present day we find that people of high-ranking are often honored with horse jewelry (such as gold brooches and medallions). Sometimes rings with the design of a horse are awarded to people as a sign of their “nobility” or “high social status”.

What is the main reason a person would wear horse jewelry? They love their horse, that’s the main reason. They want to show this love of the animal off to others. Sure they have to work or study or shop or play, but this doesn’t mean they can’t show the love of their favorite animal off to others while they do.
